Facebook social networking website turns nine-year-old today

The world’s most popular social networking website, Facebook has turned nine-year-old today. Facebook was started on February 4, 2004 in a dorm of Harvard University by Mark Zuckerburg with the help of his four friends Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum and Chris Hughes.

With well over 1 billion users, it’s hard to believe that the site has not even been around for a decade.

Zuckeberg relaunched Facemash as TheFacebook.com, initially and the name was later changed to Facebook. In 2005, the site allowed users to upload pictures. Till date, Facebook has seen over 219 billion photos being uploaded.

By September 2006, Facebook began expanding and allowed anyone over 13 to join the site. It also got the NewsFeed in 2006.

Facebook CEO Zuckerburg recently announced a new feature called Graph Search, a tool that utilises social data to help compile results for users.

Additional features like Facebook Cards and voice calling on iPhone in North America to attract users were also rolled out by the company.

Facebook has been mired in controversies over privacy concerns, underage members, hacking attacks etc despite tremendous growoth.

The CEO of Facebook Zuckerburg has been dragged into lawsuits over stealing the idea for Facebook from his seniors at Harvard – Cameron Winklewoss, Tyler Winklewoss and Divya Narendra.

A separate case also filed by Co-founder Eduardo Saverin accusing Zuckerburg for pushing him out of the company. Both the cases were settled out of court.

Facebook in 2012 floated its IPO and the company went public with a peak market capitalisation of over $104 billion. The hype was short-lived and the stock of the company soon took a battering however the company is set to evolve more this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has indicated that in the earnings call, highlighting that mobile and new elements will be the key to the site’s future.
